It is important for all duelists to understand all the different Monster Effects of the game. Quick Effects are one of the different Monster Effects that need to be recognised and understood, Quick Effect Monsters can be catagorised as either, Trigger Quick Effects or Multi-Trigger Quick Effects. Identifying these is difficult but important.
QUICK EFFECT MONSTERS:
Quick Effects can be activated during either your turn, or your opponents turn. All Quick Effects are the only Monster Effect of Spell Speed 2 so they can be chained to most of the cards that exist in the game today. Quick Effects are easy to recognise. They will have something like "during either players turn..." or "when your opponent..." written in their effect text. If an Effect Monster's effect can be activated in your opponent's turn, then it is considered a Quick Effect Monster.
NOTE: Some Quick Effect monsters do not follow this rule and do not state that the effect can be used during your opponents turn, i.e. Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV 8. Look for other important words such as "any" implying that all Spell Cards (even your opponents), can be negated.
TRIGGER QUICK EFFECTS:
Trigger Quick Effects are very rare and really don't need much attention as you will only most likely ever only run into this 1 card when you duel.
It is impossible to identify Trigger Quick Effects from the much more useful, Multi-Trigger Quick Effects. The only way to check for sure is to look up the actual ruling on: http://yugioh.wikia.com. Trigger Quick Effects can only be activated once per chain. if you activate a Trigger Quick Effect in response to a card you cannot activate it again if your opponent wishes to activate another card in the same chain.
Light and Darkness Dragon is an example of (and probably the only) Trigger Quick Effect monster you will see in the game.
For Example:
Chain Link 1: Player A activates Fissure.
Chain Link 2: Player B's Light and Darkness Dragon's Trigger Quick Effect activates.
Chain Link 3: Player A activates Offerings to the Doomed.
------Chain resolves backwards------
Chain Link 3: Offerings to the Doomed resolves, Light and Darkness Dragon is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard.
Chain Link 2: Light and Darkness Dargon's Effect resolves, Fissure is negated.
Chain Link 1: Fissure does not resolve successfully, it's effect disappears and it is sent to the Graveyard.
------A new chain forms then forms by Light and Darkness Dragon's third effect but for this example that is not important-------
As you can see Light and Darkness Dragon was unable to activate it's effect to chain to Offerings to the Doomed. It is for this reason that it is classified as a Trigger Quick Effect Monster.
MULTI-TRIGGER QUICK EFFECT MONSTERS:
Multi-Trigger Quick Effects can be activated at multiple times in the same chain. This means that you will never be able to not activate a Multi-Trigger Quick Effect in a chain.
Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV 8
For Example:
Chain Link 1: Player A activates Fissure.
Chain Link 2: Player B chooses to activate Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV 8's effect.
Chain Link 3: Player A activates Offerings to the Doomed.
Chain Link 4: Player B chooses to activate Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV 8's effect.
------Chain resolves backwards-------
Chain Link 4: Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV 8's effect resolves, Offerings to the Doomed is negated.
Chain Link 3: Offerings to the Doomed does not resolve. It's effect is negated and is sent to the Graveyard.
Chain Link 2: Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV 8's effect resolves, Fissure is negated.
Chain Link 1: FIssure does not resolve. It's effect is negated and is sent to the Graveyard.
As you can see, Horus was able to activate more than once in the chain (unlike Light and Darkness Dragon) and has a more successful effect in that perspective.
NOTE: All Quick Effects were previously known as Multi-Trigger Effects, but because of the introduction of card such as Light and Darkness Dragon they have now been seperated into these two sub catagories. Do not get confused by the term Multi-Trigger Effect.
